Only 7 owners voted, but I got a clear sense that everyone wanted to maintain some form of keeper format in the future. I'm good with that.

So, here's my 2008 rule shuffle.

First, keepers will have the following limits:

MAXIMUM 5 hitters and 3 pitchers (40% of offense and 33% of pitchers)
or
MAXIMUM retained value of $125

What that means is this: You can keep up to 8 players BUT their total value cannot exceed $125 (including $5 per player increase) OR you can keep up to $125 in players (including $5 per player increase) but the total number of players CANNOT exceed 5 hitters/3 pitchers.

I think this is a fair and equitable way to do things, allowing keepers while placing greater emphasis on the draft. I also am hopeful that this will result in some more realistic player values at Festivus '08.

OK, onto mid-season dealing:

I have spent a considerable amount of time this year struggling with budgetary issues. It is almost Impossible for me to keep track after the first two weeks of who is an injury rep and who isn't and whether or not the right player has been dropped and what the cap hit is. Therefore, I am changing the rules.

Teams will have, starting next year, a Free Agent Acquisition Budget (FAAB) of $150. This is separate from your draft day cash of $260, which is now only good for draft day. Any money not spent on draft day is no longer carried forward into the season. This can be used in the following ways:

* Sign a free agent
* Retain a free agent signed to replace an injured player

I will be keeping separate track next year of all free agents who are signed. Any free agent signed at any time can be dropped for a returning opening day roster player and that money will be returned to your FAAB. If you drop an opening day starter, he goes back into the pot and can be signed by any other owner using whatever portion of FAAB is left. The owner who dropped the player will NOT have to retain the player's salary.

Protected costs for all rostered players will be the same as they are today (whatever their owner paid for them plus $5).

All trades are now straight up. Dollars do NOT factor into trades. This, of course, comes with the expectation that teams will not execute dump trades. To enforce this, all trades made after JULY 15 are subject to a 48-hour waiver period. During that time, any owner can make a claim on a player included in any trade, at a cost of $30 of their remaining FAAB. Example: I offer Mike A-Rod ($50) for three players totalling $14. Scott, in reviewing the trade, makes a waiver claim on A-Rod. I then have 24 hours to either work out a deal with Scott or give him A-Rod, at a cost of $30 of his remaining FAAB, or revoke the trade, keeping A-Rod.

FA Bids - August 5 - 12

Mike waives Johnny Estrada, Ray Durham and Micah Owings and signs Ryan Raburn, Rick Ankiel and Kerry Wood for $1 each

Brian places Ryan Freel on the DL and signs Joba Chamberlain for $2

Pandas waive Mike Piazza and sign Melky Cabrea for $1.

Jon places Octavio Dotel on the DL and signs Tony Pena for $2. I will do my best to have next week's free agent activity up by noon Sunday, but no promises. I was in touch with ESPN and there is NOTHING that can be done to re-apply bench moves made between April 1 and April 11. Now, I personally think that everyone gained and lost from this, and I hope that it doen't affect the year-end results. But, as I stated last week, even if we changed providers, I don't think anyone kept meticulous track of their moves, so it probably wouldn't make much difference.

Also, we had our first trade of the year (in case you haven't checked your e-mail recently). Mike shipped Matt Holliday, Freddy Garcia and Lastings Milledge to the Sandlot Gang for Derek Jeter and Rich Harden. No salary was retained in the deal and the balances below reflect the salaries exchanged in the deal.

On to the FA Activity for this week:

Mike fills two open bench spots by signing Micah Owings for $3 and Andy Marte for $1.

Brian places Hideki Matsui on the DL and signs Nate Robertson for $8.

Pandas waive Chad Billingsley and Jonny Gomes and sign Mike MacDougal and J.J. Hardy for $2 each.

Jon places Cliff Lee and Reed Johnson on the DL and signs Kip Wells for $4 and Luis Gonzalez for $3. Also waives Randy Winn and signs Geoff Jenkins for $8.

Todd waives Yuniesky Betancourt, Pedro Feliz and Scott Proctor. I CANNOT repeat roster moves done during the past week and a half. Those updates, and their effect on scoring, cannot be recovered.

Your free agents are back on your rosters. I also posted the trade between the Bears and the Sandlot, but have given them the option to reverse the trade, given the current situation.

For this week only, I will not be counting bench moves. The 5-move cap will resume on Monday.

I realize this is a hassle, but I am going to keep the league here, since the activity lost here cannot really be recovered by moving to another provider. As a result, some of the free agent moves listed below are posted, and some aren't. I will finish up the rest once each owner fixes his roster.

REMINDER: Please do not use your rostered free agents before Monday. Saturday at 10 is the cutoff to allow me until EOD Sunday to get them updated. You caught me in an insomnia cycle, hence the updates.

So, here's the moves, as well as instructions on what I need done to fix your rosters. In future, please remember to move players to the DL yourself before Saturday night. I can no longer do it for you.

Austin places Chone Figgins, Jered Weaver and Jeremy Hermida on the DL. Signs Andrew Miller for $3, Jack Wilson for $2 and Josh Hamilton for $1. Also signs Alex Gordon for $15 to fill his open bench spot. Austin, please place Hermida on the DL and then I can activate Wilson. Remaining balance: $54, $29 on DL.

Brian B. places Pedro Martinez and Chien-Ming Wang on the DL. Signs Ted Lilly for $3 and Oliver Perez for $2. Also signs Wes Helms for $2 to fill his open bench spot. Remaining balance: $53, $8 on DL.

John signs Jason Frasor for $6 to fill his open bench spot. Remaining balance: $39.

Pandas place Francisco Liriano on the DL and waive Kei Igawa. Sign Tom Gorzelanny and Noah Lowry for $1 each. Also sign Kevin Millwood for $1 to fill their open bench spot. Remaining balance: $44, $1 on DL. Also, I was greatly confused by the player bid. Were you dropping someone, since your bid requested Millwood for your open bench spot? If so, who?.

Peter places Taylor Tankersley on the DL. Signs Justin Speier for $1. Also signs Gary Matthews Jr. for $4 to fill his open bench spot (and earn Scott's undying wrath). Peter, please place Tankersley on the DL and then I can activate Speier. Remaining balance: $45, $2 on DL.

Todd places Rafael Furcal and Carlos Quentin on the DL. Signs Mark DeRosa for $4, and Miguel Olivo for $2. Also signs Brandon Lyon for $1 to fill his open bench spot. Todd, please place Furcal and Quentin on the DL and then I can activate Olivo and Lyon. Remaining balance: $77, $32 on DL.

Jon signs Ramon Ortiz for $2 to fill his open bench spot. Remaining balance: $47.

Sandlot Gang places Eric Gagne on the DL. Signs Dave Weathers for $1. Also signs Derrick Turnbow for $1 to fill his open bench spot. Remaining balance: $78, $5 on DL.

My 2007 Baseball Predictions

Here's my predictions for this year. Please check your rosters for accuracy. I will check them as well.

A couple of things about Free Agent bidding:

All Free Agent bids are to be submitted to crbl2006@gmail.com. Bidding is weekly and each weekly bid period closes at 10 PM SATURDAY. Highest bid for a player wins the player's services and, in the event of ties, the first bid in wins.

The seventh bench spot can be a pitcher OR hitter. Since each team has only 5 moves per week, there's no reason to limit bench composition to only 2 pitchers. You want to carry an extra pitcher, go crazy.

Reminder that team budgets are now $325. After today's draft, here are your team-by-team balances:

Brian: $50
Mike: $97
John Benoit: $57
Peter: $60
Todd: $64
Matt: $57
Joel: $59
Austin: $58
Scott: $78
Pandas: $58
Jon Wilton: $61
Sandlot Gang: $85

As far as your rosters go, you have control over them. Move players around as you see fit. Remember you only have 5 bench-active moves per week. You can shift players around in your active roster all you want and DL moves DO NOT count against your 5 weekly moves. Free Agents will be added to your rosters in time for MONDAY'S games.

Lastly, I do not have the ability to perform retroactive roster moves on ESPN. Therefore, if you are going to be away for a length of time greater than a week, you should ask another owner to update your roster for you.

All updates will be posted here. I will also be reviving the league Blog (www.crbl.blogspot.com) and posting updates there, so if you need to see older notes, go there.

Brian

Free Agents - June 25

Before I get to the free agent moves, a bit of news to pass on. I'm sure many of you are aware of this, but for those who aren't, Todd Hoare (co-owner of The Back End) is moving to the U.S. He will be spending the next two years working at the Massachussets Institute of Technology (MIT) as a research assistant (a.k.a. SLAVE). When he finishes his two-year sentence, he will return to Hamilton to assume a professorship at McMaster.

Todd, our prayers our with you for your trip, that you would have an enriching time at MIT and that God will use you in a powerful way while there. We know Julio Lugo has struggled to bounce back from his abdominal strain, and now Baldelli has his own issues. The left hamstring injury that was supposed to delay his expected return last month by a week or so has not gotten any better. He continues to have soreness and was scheduled for another medical exam to determine why it has been so slow to heal. Tampa Bay can make all the excuses they want, but this injury seems like more than just minor soreness. Baldelli is a minimum of two weeks away from being activated.

Bartolo Colon (RHP, LAA)
After 12 days spent on the disabled list, Colon saw the inflammation in his throwing shoulder dissipate, but he's now just starting to throwing lightly on the side. He was eligible to return May 1st, but it was obvious when he went on the disabled list that he could be out a little longer than that. One veteran Angles observer believes it will be closer to the end of May when he finally returns. The Angels are determined to make sure when he does return that he doesn't suffer a relapse. His rehab work is slow and deliberate and will remain so.

Rich Harden (RHP, OAK)
Harden strained a back muscle in his last start when he was fielding a ground ball. The A's ace is expected to miss three-to-five weeks with the injury. Last season, he missed five weeks late in the year with a strained lat muscle. Earlier in the year it was a strained oblique muscle that cost him six weeks. In both cases, Harden returned later than he was initially expected. You can bet the A's will be cautious this year in an attempt to avoid a relapse during the rehab. This could mean Harden won't return for 5-6 weeks. We'll have a better idea of where he's at in another two weeks.

Brian Roberts (2B, BAL)
The Orioles placed Roberts on the disabled list with a strained left hamstring that he suffered on Saturday. Roberts has struggled with a left hip flexor the past couple of weeks, and it's not out of the question that the two ailments are related. The injury could be the result of Roberts over-compensating for the hip flexor. The medical staff believes Roberts will need about ten days to bounce back and be game ready. If they are accurate, he'll be back around May 14. However, until he tests the leg in a week or so, we won't for sure.

Coco Crisp (OF, BOS)
Crisp's X-ray last Friday revealed the fractured knuckle on his left index finger is healing nicely but still not enough to resume baseball-related activities. Crisp, who suffered the fracture on April 8, is able to do range-of-motion exercises and flexibility work but still needs more time for the fracture to heal. It has been just three weeks since the injury, so it doesn't look like he's delayed or suffered some sort of setback. Crisp projected return in mid-May seems like a viable target, but we'll know more once he starts swinging a bat.

Kelvim Escobar (RHP, LAA)
Escobar left his latest outing with pain caused by a blood blister on the middle finger of his pitching hand. The ailment surfaced a few weeks ago, but has recently worsened to the point that he will need to miss his next scheduled start. Unlike most blisters that pitchers develop, this one isn't likely caused by the way he grips the ball, so it shouldn't be a chronic problem. It is reasonable to think that he will just miss the one start.

Ruben Sierra (OF, MIN)
The Twins have lost Sierra for at least a month due to a strained left biceps. He was scheduled to have a detailed examination done on Monday to determine the severity of the injury. The results of the exam are not currently available, but considering his age (40), he's likely to need more time to recover than the average player.

Todd Helton (1B, COL)
Helton received the green light to resume workouts late last week. He's expected to return to the team this Wednesdays to begin more intense workouts. The biggest issue Helton faces in returning from his intestinal problem is to regain his overall strength and stamina. He has lost a noticeable amount of weight with the ailment. Because his condition doesn't have a track record amongst baseball players, it's difficult to get a gauge on how long he'll be out.

Ian Kinsler (2B, TEX)
Almost three weeks after going on the disabled list with a dislocated left thumb, Kinsler is still struggling to swing a bat with both hands. The biggest problem is when his hands roll over during the swing. This puts extra stress on the thumb, something it's not ready for yet. While some reports indicate he might be back in about a week, the current problem he's battling through suggests it might take closer to 14-17 days before he can return.

Julio Mateo (RHP, SEA)
When you're a reliever and you walk eight batters in twelve innings, it usually means either your mechanics are flawed or you're hurt. In Mateo's case, the Mariners tweaked his mechanics, thinking that's what the problem was. However, Mateo admitted over the weekend that he's been struggling with tendonitis in his pitching shoulder. The Mariners placed him on the disabled list over the weekend but aren't yet sure how long it will take him to recover.

Salary cap status

As promised two weeks ago, here’s the current salary status:

Al: 1 open bench spot, $81 cap space.

Brian: 1 player on the DL ($6 Adam Eaton), $9 retained, $49 cap space.

Mike: 4 players on the DL ($6 Noah Lowry, $2 Dmitri Young, $11 Ken Griffey, $8 Jeremy Hermida), $84 cap space.

John Benoit: $2 retained, $49 cap space.

Peter: 1 open bench spot, 1 player on the DL ($17 Mark Prior), $66 cap space.

Todd/Joel: $8 retained, $46 cap space.

Matt: $76 cap space.

Doug: 4 players on the DL ($2 Kerry Wood, $15 Julio Lugo, $30 Derrek Lee, $2 Brian Bannister), $6 retained, $77 cap space.

Scott: 1 player on the DL ($6 C.C. "It's a small, localized point, not a huge tear," trainer Larry Davis said. "It's not a large area that's disrupted. ... I talked to him and he's still very sore, very painful." After placing Harden on the DL, the A's recalled Ron Flores from Triple-A to take Harden's roster spot. Flores will work in middle relief for Oakland.

At this point, it's uncertain who will replace Harden in the starting rotation. Brad Halsey, who has a 1.42 ERA in 12 2/3 innings out of the bullpen this year, is a candidate to slide into the role. He started 26 games for the Diamondbacks last year. Kirk Saarloos is also candidate to replace Harden, but he threw an inning against the Royals on Sunday, which makes him a less likely choice.

Whoever ends up moving into the rotation will start on Tuesday against the Angels.

Going on the DL

The Orioles placed Brian Roberts on the 15-day DL Sunday with a strained groin. They called up Brandon Fahey from Triple-A Ottawa to replace Roberts on the roster. While Roberts is out, Chris Gomez will likely see most of the action at second base.

John Patterson went on the 15-day disabled list Friday with a strained muscle in his forearm. Zach Day, who was claimed off waivers from the Rockies Wednesday, will replace Patterson in the starting rotation. Day started on Sunday against the Cardinals and received the loss, allowing four runs on six hits and three walks in five innings of work.

The Giants placed Ray Durham on the DL Friday with a strained left hamstring. To replace Durham on the roster, the club called up Kevin Frandsen from Triple-A Fresno. Frandsen has been starting at second base and batting second while Durham has been out.

Brian Bannister was placed on the disabled list Friday with a strained hamstring. The Mets recalled Victor Diaz from Triple-A Norfolk to take Bannister's roster spot. Diaz will serve as a back up in left and right field. John Maine, who is currently at Triple-A, is slated to start in Bannister's place on Tuesday. Maine has posted a 2.63 ERA in four Triple-A starts this season.

The Cardinals placed Ricardo Rincon on the disabled list Friday with a shoulder injury. The team recalled John Gall from Triple-A to take Rincon's roster spot. Gall will primarily serve as a pinch-hitter, although he could see a couple of starts in left field.

Jorge Cantu went on the DL Wednesday with a broken bone on top of his left foot. He is expected to miss two to three weeks. With Cantu out, Ty Wigginton and Nick Green will see action at second base. When Wigginton is playing second, Sean Burroughs and Russ Branyan will share time at third base.

The Mariners placed Julio Mateo on the 15-day disabled list Sunday with right shoulder tendinitis. To replace him on the roster, the club called up Sean Green from Triple-A Tacoma. Green will work in middle relief for Seattle.

Julio Santana landed on the disabled list Wednesday with a stomach ailment. The Phillies called up Clay Condrey from Triple-A Scranton Wilkes-Barre to replace Santana in the bullpen. Condrey will be used in middle relief.

The Royals placed Shane Costa on the 15-day DL Saturday after an MRI revealed a strained left hamstring. The team recalled Kerry Robinson from Triple-A Oklahoma to replace Costa on the roster. Since both Costa and David DeJesus are out, Robinson and Esteban German will split time in center field.

The Twins placed Ruben Sierra on the disabled list Sunday with a strained left biceps. To replace Sierra on the roster, the club recalled Dennys Reyes from Triple-A. Reyes will work in middle relief for Minnesota.

Coming off the DL

Ken Griffey Jr., who is recovering from an inflamed tendon behind his right knee, was eligible to come off the DL on Friday, but he doesn't expect to be activated until sometime this week, at the earliest. Once Griffey does return, Ryan Freel, who has been starting in center field, will likely go back to being a super utilityman due to the emergence of Brandon Phillips at second base.

The Rangers activated Mark DeRosa from the DL Sunday. He had been out with an ankle injury. He is expected to see most of the action at second base since Ian Kinsler is still recovering from a dislocated left thumb. Drew Meyer was sent back to Triple-A to make room on the roster for DeRosa.

Julio Lugo, who has been out with an abdominal strain, has been taking batting practice and could return to the Devil Rays on Friday. He's expected to begin a rehab assignment early this week. Tomas Perez's value will take a big hit once Lugo returns.

Aubrey Huff, who has been out with a sprained knee, is expected to begin a rehab assignment early this week and could join the Devil Rays on Friday. When Huff returns to action, Russ Branyan and Sean Burroughs will see significantly less playing time.

The Rockies activated Byung-Hyun Kim from the 15-day disabled list Saturday. He had yet to pitch this year due to a strained left hamstring. The club sent Miguel Asencio to Triple-A Colorado Springs to make room on the roster for Kim. Kim started against the Marlins on Sunday and picked up the victory, allowing one run on five hits and a walk in 6 2/3 innings while striking out nine.

Fernando Cabrera, who had been out with a sprained left heel, was activated from the disabled list Saturday. To make room on the roster for Cabrera, the Indians optioned Fausto Carmona to Triple-A Buffalo. C.C. Sabathia will replace Carmona in the starting rotation when he returns from the DL on Tuesday. Sabathia has been out with a strained abdominal muscle.

Todd Helton, who is on the DL with an intestinal problem, could be activated on Friday, the day he's eligible to be activated. Jason Smith has been seeing the majority of the time at first base since Eli Marrero is ailing, as well. So once Helton returns, most of Smith's playing time will come at second base.

Aaron Small threw on Saturday and could be activated from the DL on Monday. He has been sidelined with a strained hamstring. He will likely be used in middle relief once he returns, and he could also pick up an occasional spot start.

Ryan Doumit, who is recovering from a strained hamstring, could return to the Pirates on Monday. He has been on a minor league rehab assignment with Triple-A. Manager Jim Tracy has stated that he is open to the possibility of keeping both Ronny Paulino and Humberto Cota on the roster when Doumit returns.

The Orioles activated Todd Williams from the 15-day disabled list Saturday. He had been out with shoulder inflammation. To make room on the roster for Williams, the club sent Chris Britton to Double-A Bowie.

Jeremy Hermida, who has been out with a strained right hip flexor, could be activated from the DL on Wednesday. He is expected to head out on a minor league rehab assignment on Monday.

Bumps and Bruises

(This section will look at day-to-day type injuries heading into the week)

Jermaine Dye left Sunday's game in the fifth inning with a strained left calf muscle. The severity of the injury isn't known.

Gary Sheffield is day-to-day with a bruised left wrist and right knee. He sustained the injury when he collided with Shea Hillenbrand at first base on Saturday. Sheffield was not in the lineup on Sunday. Bernie Williams replaced him in right field.

Scott Rolen hasn't played since April 24 due to a bout with bronchitis. He is expected to travel with the team on Monday, but he will still likely need a couple of more days to regain his strength. Scott Spiezio has been filling in at third base while Rolen has been out.

Carlos Beltran, who has been dealing with a hamstring injury, returned to action on Saturday. However, he plans to limit his stolen-base attempts for the time being to avoid aggravating the muscle.

Milton Bradley missed his third straight game Sunday because of a sore left knee. Manager Ken Macha said Sunday that Bradley also has some pain in his lower right side. There are no immediate plans to place Bradley on the disabled list. Jay Payton has been playing in right field in Bradley's absence.

Esteban German left Sunday's game against the A's in the sixth inning after getting hit in the face by a misjudged flyball. It's not certain if he'll have to miss any time.

Javy Lopez has missed the last three games with back spasms. He is considered day-to-day.

Kevin Millar was not in the lineup Sunday due to a bruised right hand. In his absence, Jeff Conine started at first base while Nick Markakis started in left field. Millar is day-to-day.

Miguel Tejada is dealing with a sore knee. To allow the knee to heal, he served as the DH on Sunday instead of playing shortstop. Brandon Fahey started at short in place of Tejada.

The A's are hoping that Huston Street, who has been recovering from a pectoral muscle injury, will be 100 percent by Monday. He hasn't pitched since April 18. Justin Duchscherer, who had been filling in for the Street in the closer role, has been unavailable the last couple of games due to tendinitis in his right elbow.

Rosters and Roles

The Blue Jays optioned Jason Frasor to Triple-A Syracuse on Saturday and recalled Dustin McGowan. McGowan will work long relief initially but could end up starting games at some point. He posted a 5.11 ERA in seven relief appearances at Triple-A.

The Rangers announced Saturday that Robinson Tejeda will replace Rick Bauer in the starting rotation. Tejeda is 0-2 with a 5.33 ERA in five Triple-A games, though he worked seven scoreless innings, while striking out seven, in his last outing. He will start on Tuesday against Tampa Bay. Bauer will either be optioned to the minors or will be designated for assignment.

Akinori Otsuka will replace Francisco Cordero as the Rangers closer for the time being. Cordero, who had blown four of his last five save chances, will work in middle relief for now. If Akinori Otsuka pitches well in the role, there is no guarantee that Cordero will reclaim the job, even if he gets back on track.

The Angels called up Howie Kendrick from Triple-A to take the roster spot of the injured Maicer Izturis. Kendrick has started just one game since he joined the team on Monday. He could be sent back to the minors when Juan Rivera returns from the DL.

Juan Cruz will replace Russ Ortiz in the D'Backs starting rotation. Ortiz will head to the bullpen. Juan Cruz pitched five innings against the Giants Saturday, allowing just one earned run on two hits while striking out three. It was his first start since 2003.

The Royals recalled Runelvys Hernandez from Triple-A Omaha Wednesday to slide into the rotation. He had been working in the minors to build up his endurance. The Royals optioned Joe Nelson to Triple-A to make room on the roster for Hernandez.

The Braves activated Macay McBride from the DL Sunday. He has yet to pitch this year due to a sore forearm. McBride will work in a middle relief role for Atlanta. The team optioned Tony Pena to Triple-A Richmond to make room on the roster for McBride.

Free Agents - April 30

Sorry I'm late. Burnett (RHP, TOR)
Burnett is back on the disabled list with more pain in his pitching elbow. Both Burnett and the Blue Jays are speculating it is scar tissue problem again. He's scheduled to see Dr. James Andrews on Monday, the surgeon who performed his Tommy John surgery a couple of years ago.

There are three likely scenarios:

(1) The injury is related to scar tissue that may or may not need to be surgically removed. It's unlikely the Blue Jays will continue with this roller coaster ride with his elbow. They need to get it fixed soon. A minimum 15-day DL stint is possible but not the best long-term solution.
(2) The ulnar nerve in his pitching elbow is inflamed due to the scar tissue and the prior surgery. While this scenario is possible, we've heard nothing regarding numbness in his forearm or hand, a typical symptom of nerve involvement. If this is the cause, then surgery would be the likely option and the loss of at least two months of the 2006 season.
(3) The ulnar collateral ligament is damaged and he either needs an extended DL stint or surgery to repair the damage. Surgery would cost him the entire 2006 season. This is the least likely outcome based on the available information.

Julio Lugo (SS, TB)
In a classic case of swimming in quicksand, Lugo struggles to make noticeable progress from an intercostal muscle strain in his ribcage on his left side. He's illustrating how difficult it is to predict a return date or see players rebound quickly from this ailment. It just doesn't happen. The Devil Rays are speculating he won't be back for another three weeks. This puts his return date around May 15, meaning he would miss about six weeks with the injury, which is about two weeks longer than the average recovery time. What makes his situation more troubling is that this is the second 'adjustment' the Devil Rays have made with his recovery rate. They're either afraid to term it a setback when they announce the return date, or, the ailment just isn't responding to treatment as quickly as they expected. He needs to get to the level of recovery where he can go out on a rehab assignment. The longer he is out of the lineup, the longer he'll need to play in minor league games to get his swing down and feel comfortable at the plate. This isn't the kind of news you want to hear if you are Logo owner. Any kind of setback might push his return to the end of May or early June.

Huston Street (RHP, OAK)
The strained pectoralis minor muscle that has had Street on the shelf for five days and counting is improving, albeit very slowly. During a weekend throwing session, he cut short the scheduled workout due to arm fatigue. He stated it wasn't pain, just the fact he got tired while throwing. It is a little worrisome when he hadn't thrown more than a dozen pitches when he was shutdown. The Athletics list him as day-to-day but we aren't likely to see him for a couple more days. This isn't a common ailment, so there isn't a track record to compare it too. At what point does Oakland place him on the disabled list? One would think if he's not back by Wednesday they would place him on the DL retroactively. If you have the opportunity, place him on the reserve roster until he starts pitching again and we can better judge his health.

Todd Helton (1B, COL)
Helton's current medical situation is pretty scary. He's struggled with stomach pain the past few days and was just recently released from the hospital. While at the hospital, he was tested for just about everything under the sun. As of now the medical staff hasn't revealed the results of those tests. I won't speculate on what his condition is because it is unproductive to do so. We'll report on his condition once the team provides more information.

Chris Young (RHP, SD)
Young indicated recently that part of the reason he's struggled at times early this season is due to a jammed pitched thumb. Young says he can't get a good feel for the ball because his thumb feels like it has been in a freezer. Young has actually pitched pretty darn well overall this year. Hitters are batting under .200 against him and his Ratio is 1.12. He was scheduled to have an MRI Monday to determine the damage to the thumb. The concern by Young and the Padres is that the thumb is not getting any better and they wonder if the condition will deteriorate as the season moves along.

Mark Teahen (3B, KC)
The Royals were counting on Teahen to step up his production this season. So far he's been a huge disappointment, and maybe now we know why. He's admitted to having a sore right shoulder, a condition that's been getting worse rather than better. If the shoulder has been an unreported problem for a while, that might explain the drop in power he's exhibited so far. The lack of home runs is somewhat expected because he'll never be a big home run hitter, but his lack of doubles may be as a result of the injury. His anemic .213 BA doesn't help matters either. The Royals haven't talked about placing him on the disabled list yet, but this could change in the next few days if he doesn't rebound physically.

Eric Milton (LHP, CIN)
In 2003, Milton lost a season to left knee surgery and now he has developed more problems with his troublesome left knee. He was scheduled to undergo surgery to clean out damaged meniscus cartilage on Monday. The Reds medical staff isn't worried about the surgery, comparing it to the same level that Jason LaRue underwent in March. LaRue came back in 23 days and the Reds expect the same timetable for Milton. Working against Milton is his past history of left knee problems. This factor could push his return to four weeks.

Esteban Loaiza (RHP, OAK)
Loaiza left his latest start with spasms in his left trapezius muscle. This is the muscle that runs from the neck to the top of the shoulder. The tightness started while he was warming up and he was unable to get loose during the game. It started to spasm during the game and he had to be removed from the start. The spasms caused a noticeable drop in his velocity and a change in his mechanics. In some cases, this type of injury doesn't allow a pitcher to get full extension on their delivery. There is no word on if he'll have his next start pushed back a few days to allow his shoulder rebound.

Ray Durham (2B, SF)
Durham suffered a strained left hamstring tendon over the weekend while running out an infield hit. Durham described it as a "grab" rather than a pop, which is a good sign that he didn't tear the muscle or tendon. He's listed as day-to-day and will be evaluated further on Monday.

Juan Rivera (OF, LAA)
The Angels placed Rivera on the disabled list with tightness in his rib cage. The ailment got worse over the weekend when he attempted any activity, which led to the DL stint. The Angles don't have a projection on how long he'll be out until another round of tests are done and they can get some of the pain to subside.

A Couple of Things

First, the free agent bidding cycle now ends at 6 PM SUNDAY. The 12 midnight Saturday thing wasn't working for me and, since there were some concerns with 10 PM Saturday not giving sufficient time to submit bids, this seemed to make sense. I thought about Friday, but this time allows for all but the Sunday night games to be played and you can set your rosters for the coming week.

Second, last year I mentioned that I receive regular updates on players as a Baseball HotSheet subscriber (there's a link on the right if you want to subscribe). I suggested sharing some of those updates and received no negative feedback to the idea. So, here's your first player update:

Headline: Loss of Lee shakes up Cubs

As you surely know by now, Derrek Lee suffered a broken wrist in a collision at first base on Wednesday and is expected to miss 8-to-10 weeks of action. With a .318 average, three homers and five steals, Lee appeared on his way to another monster season, and his loss is an enormous one for the Cubs.

Todd Walker has started three straight games since Lee's injury, two at first base and one at second. Walker was a semi-full-time player before this injury but will basically play every day now. When Walker is at first base, Jerry Hairston will usually start at second (provided he can stay healthy, which is never a sure thing with Hairston). John Mabry also stands to pick up some extra action with Lee out.

The big difference for Walker is that he'll probably get starts against lefties that he would not have otherwise.

Going on the DL

Eric Milton is scheduled to undergo arthroscopic knee surgery on Monday and will be placed on the DL. He will miss at least three weeks of action. The Reds plan to recall Elizardo Ramirez to start on Monday. Ramirez has 15 strikeouts and no walks in 16 innings for Triple-A Louisville this season and could get two starts this week.

The Rockies placed Todd Helton on the DL because of a stomach ailment that is still being diagnosed. Eli Marrero has started three straight games at first base in place of Helton. Ryan Spilborghs was recalled to replace Helton on the roster but probably won't play much.

The Angels placed Juan Rivera on the DL with tightness in his ribcage. So far, Tim Salmon, Edgardo Alfonzo and Maicer Izturis have picked up extra playing time because of Rivera's absence. Reggie Willits was recalled from Triple-A Salt Lake to give the team another outfielder, but he probably won't get much playing time.

The Blue Jays placed A.J. Burnett on the DL for the second time this season because of elbow problems. The team has decided to let Roy Halladay pitch on an extra day of rest on Friday, but it's not clear who will start against Baltimore on Thursday. Scott Downs is a candidate, as are minor leaguers Casey Janssen and Josh Banks. However, since both Janssen and Banks started for Triple-A Syracuse in a doubleheader on Sunday, Downs might be the best bet.

The Royals placed David DeJesus on the disabled list with a strained left hamstring. In the four games that DeJesus has been out, Esteban German and Shane Costa have each started two games in center field.

After seemingly establishing himself in the lineup for the Orioles, David Newhan suffered a broken leg on Monday. He had been playing regularly in left field, and his absence has opened up more playing time for Corey Patterson, Nick Markakis and Jeff Conine.

The Angels placed Bartolo Colon on the DL with shoulder inflammation. Hector Carrasco has replaced him in the rotation.

Coming off the DL

The Padres activated Mike Cameron from the DL in time for Sunday's game. Cameron started in center field and batted fifth, though he may bat sixth when Mike Piazza is in the lineup. Ben Johnson loses playing time with Cameron's return.

Nomar Garciaparra came off the DL to start at first base for the Dodgers on Saturday, but he was not in the lineup Sunday. Nomar may be back, but there's no telling how long he'll be able to stay healthy. James Loney was sent back to the minors to make room for Nomar.

The Giants activated Armando Benitez from the DL on Wednesday. It was thought that Benitez might be eased back into the mix, but Benitez earned his first save last night. Tim Worrell will go back to setup work.

The Tigers activated Todd Jones from the DL after Thursday's game, and Jones earned his first save on Friday. However, apparently not wanting Jones to work on back-to-back days, the Tigers gave Saturday's save chance to Fernando Rodney, and Rodney converted. Save chances should be few and far between for Rodney with Jones back, but he may still get a few. Jones earned his second save on Sunday.

The Mets activated Kazuo Matsui from the disabled list. Matsui has started three of the last four games for the Mets, with Chris Woodward getting the other start at second. With Anderson Hernandez out for a while, Matsui should be relatively safe.

Mark Hendrickson pitched five innings in an extended spring training game on Saturday. Barring a setback, he's in line to come off the DL and pitch against the Yankees on Thursday.

The Marlins are hoping that Jeremy Hermida can come off the DL next weekend, so he could play as many as three games this week. Matt Cepicky started his third straight game in right field for the Marlins on Sunday after Chris Aguila had started the previous six.

Bumps and Bruises

Kameron Loe is battling a chest cold but hopes to be able to make his scheduled start on Wednesday.

Carlos Beltran was out of the lineup once again on Sunday because of his tender hamstring, and Beltran remains day-to-day. The only good news is that he pinch-hit on Friday, which obviously means the Mets don't expect to have to place him on the disabled list.

Huston Street was unavailable for the fifth straight game on Sunday and may not be available for the next series against the Rangers because of his chest injury. It's probably safe to count him out until at least Friday. Justin Duchscherer and Kiko Calero will get any save chances in the meantime.

Garret Atkins has missed the last two games with a virus. It is not believed to be anything serious.

Bobby Crosby strained his right triceps on Friday night and missed games Saturday and Sunday. He is expected to work out before Monday's game and could be available. The injury is not considered serious.

Jake Peavy is expected to make his start this week despite a bruised shin.

Craig Counsell missed his fourth straight game on Sunday because of a tight right hamstring. He's day-to-day, and Damion Easley has been starting in his place.

Luis Castillo has been bothered by a sore knee and missed his third straight game on Sunday. However, he was available for late-game defense, so after Monday's off day he could be ready to play Tuesday.

Esteban Loaiza left Sunday's game with a spasm in his upper back. The AP reported that Loaiza was clocked at only 80 to 82 mph on his fastball. If Loaiza goes on the DL, Brad Halsey, Kirk Saarloos and Joe Kennedy would be the top candidates to replace him in the rotation. Halsey is clearly the best pitcher in that group.

Marcus Giles (finger) and Edgar Renteria (side) were both out of Atlanta's lineup once again on Sunday night, but both could return as soon as Monday.

Rosters and Roles

The Cubs optioned Jerome Williams to Triple-A Iowa. Angel Guzman was called up to take his place on the roster and could start in Williams' slot on Wednesday. Guzman has given up 12 earned runs in 16 1/3 innings over three starts for Iowa this season, but in those innings he also allowed just 15 hits with 23 strikeouts and only three walks. If Guzman doesn't get the nod, Rich Hill could be recalled.

Jeff DaVanon seems to have established himself as an everyday starter against right-handers at the expense of Eric Byrnes.

Miguel Asencio will replace Zach Day in the rotation for the Rockies. We shouldn't have to tell you that you want no part of Asencio on your team - though both of his starts this week are at least away from Coors Field.

Brandon Phillips started his eighth straight game at second base for the Reds on Sunday and hit his third homer and drove in four more runs. Phillips has an incredible 17 RBI in just 41 at-bats this season. So long as Ryan Freel is in center field, Phillips can play second every day. If he's still hot when Ken Griffey comes off the DL, the Reds will have to figure out how to keep both Phillips and Freel in the lineup.

The Red Sox recalled Willie Harris from Triple-A Pawtucket, and Harris has started two of the last three games in center field. He'll continue to see regular action there until Coco Crisp returns in a couple of weeks and could provide some stolen base help in AL-only play.

Free Agents - April 23.

Free Agent activity for this week.

Note: The change to a 12 midnight Saturday cutoff for bids means that I will be doing updates either Sunday morning or afternoon, which probably means you won't be able to set your rosters yourself on Sundays. If you have a specific plan for who you want active/inactive pending your bid results, let me know as part of you bid e-mail and I'll set your roster for you.

Note 2: In reviewing some moves this week, I saw that players who were put on the DL were reserved by you guys. If a player is placed on the DL, you have the ability to Disable the player, which does not count against your weekly 5-move allotment. If I see the player as being Reserved, that move counts.

Here's this week's activity:

Brian waives Shannon Stewart and signs Brandon Phillips for $2.

Mike places Dmitri Young, Ken Griffey and Jeremy Hermida on the DL and signs Dave Roberts, Ryan Langerhans and Trot Nixon for $1 each.

Matt signs Xavier Nady for $2 to fill his open bench spot

Doug places Derrek Lee on the DL and signs Todd Walker for $7. Doug also waives Mike Cuddyer, Chris Reitsma and Chad Orvella and signs Casey Blake for $3, Bronson Arroyo for $4 and Brian Bannister for $2.

Austin places Bartolo Colon and A.J. Burnett on the DL and signs Jason Marquis and Jarrod Washburn for $1 each.

Pandas place Ryan Doumit on the DL and sign Toby Hall for $1.

Scott signs Ty Wigginton for $5 to fill his open bench spot.

That's all.

A few updates

First, good news. I have been informed by The Sporting News that I am receiving a full refund from them. The bad news is that Austin is going to have to now live in the land of TQS on a full time basis. Oh, well, at least we should get some quality rants to read from time to time.

Second, regarding TQS, I have learned that any moves made after the first game of the day is underway will not be applied until the following day. Please check the date at the top of your roster page. If the date has already ticked over, e-mail the commish and I'll make your move for you. Also, please make sure you select "reserve" and not "waive", which is right below it in the pulldown. I've had to do a couple of fixes for that.

OK, that's all.

Free Agents - April 16

Free agent moves for the week:

John Benoit waives Keith Foulke and signs Roberto Hernandez for $4.

Austin places Ian Kinsler on the DL and signs Craig Wilson for $1.

Brian waives Kyle Davies, Dave Dellucci and Jacque Jones and signs Tomo Ohka for $1, Wilson Betemit for $2 and Brad Hawpe for $4.

Pandas waive Anderson Hernandez and sign Jose Castillo for $1.

Todd and Joel waive Matt Clement and sign Dave Weathers for $3.

Doug signs Bill Mueller for $3 to fill his open bench spot. The answer was reported in the Baltimore Sun, and it comes from a little-known exception to Rule 10.19 (c4), which reads:

Do not credit a victory to a relief pitcher who is ineffective in a brief appearance, when a succeeding relief pitcher pitches effectively in helping his team maintain the lead. In such cases, credit the succeeding relief pitcher with the victory.

In this case, Jim Brower entered the game in the bottom of the eighth inning with a runner on second and the score 4-3 in favor of the Devil Rays. Brower allowed an RBI single to Jonny Gomes, and then Gomes was caught stealing to end the inning. So since Brower quite literally did nothing that could be viewed as positive to his team's cause, the official scorer determined that Ray - who pitched a 1-2-3 ninth after Melvin Mora's three-run homer gave the Orioles a 6-5 lead - should get the win.

We're Up!!!!! Also, Free Agent Activity 4/9

Man, it's like coming home after a really long, unpleasant business trip.

OK, I have rebuilt the rosters on TQS and updated rosters for those who sent me a list of changes. I have also applied the last two weeks of free agent changes, rerun the stats and registered everyone (under your nicknames). You will see three invitation e-mails per team. Sorry about that, I was making a farce of setting up the teams and updating e-mail addresses. Please re-verify your team information and check that moves were made correctly.

Before I explain how you manage your roster, here's last week's free agent activity:

Mike places Noah Lowry on the DL and waives Ervin Santana. Mike signs Danys Baez for $15 and Fernando Rodney for $5.
Doug places Julio Lugo and Kerry Wood on the DL and signs Jack Wilson for $1 and Dan Miceli for $2.
Austin signs Adrian Gonzalez for $4 to fill his open bench spot.
Todd and Joel waive Joe Randa and sign Lance Niekro for $1.
Scott places C.C. Sabathia (and the Music Factory) on the DL and signs Jon Papelbon for $10.
John Benoit signs Omar Vizquel for $5 to fill his open bench spot.
Pandas place Armando Benitez on the DL and waive Corey Patterson. Pandas sign Paul Maholm for $1 and Nick Markakis for $1.

Now, to manage your rosters.

From your team page on TQS, under the heading Transactions, you will see a pull-down box with "Make Moves" in it. Click on the arrow and select "Lineup Changes". You will see a lineup display almost exactly like the TSN one. Your active roster is on the left and your bench on the right. You can disable/activate/deactivate/change positions from here. Please remember that you have 5 moves per week back and forth from your bench. Position changes and DL moves do NOT count against the 5. I have access to a bloody GREAT interface to tell me what moves have been made by each team this week, so I can check that nobody's exceeded their limits.

Please check your rosters ASAP. Also, if there are retroactive moves you need to make that are not yet recorded, please let me know through the commish message board (same process as previous years). I'll make the necessary updates and re-run the numbers.

Lastly, thanks to Scott for his offer to help get things back up and running as well as to those of you who have written to encourage me and support this decision. It is really appreciated.

<link rel='alternate' type='text/html' href='http://crbl.blogspot.com/2006/04/were-up-also-free-agent-activity-49.html' title='We're Up!!!!! I read around the TSN site last night and there appears to be no way to recover the first week and a half of stats. Since I need to re-enter the rosters anyway, I am moving us back to TQStats and am initiating the process to get our money refunded. I appreciate that the vote was 4-3 in favour of staying put, but at least one of the votes seemed to be based on me doing less work and having less aggravation. Believe me when I say that I would be aggravated every time I looked at TSN knowing that our league was not operating at a level I consider acceptable.

To address some concerns, I am making a few amendments to our operations:

** I am allowing teams to do their own bench moves. Free agents/trades will still be done through me. I will have the ability to monitor moves (which I didn't on TSN) to ensure no one exceeds their allotted 5 moves per week. This relieves my workload considerably.
** Weighting for pitching is back in, but I have changed net wins and net saves to just wins and saves.

To those who liked TSN, I'm sorry. There just wasn't enough flexibility or support for my satisfaction. I am much more at ease with TQS. As far as the money goes, I will not ask anyone for anything at this point in time. However, if I cannot get resolution from TSN, I will leave it up to the individual teams to decide whether or not they wish to voluntarily help defray my cost of setting us up on TQS. Nobody is required to pay again.

New Poll on TSN Website

Gents, I have drafted a new poll regarding how you want to proceed for the remainder of the season. I don't know how or if TSN will be able to help us out with fixing our league. If they do, then terrific. If they don't, we have two choices: Stay with things the way they are for this year or go back to TQStats. If we go back to TQStats, there will be an additional $10 per team charge. I would try to get our money back from TSN, but I am not holding my breath. Please let me know how you want to proceed.

I also would like to know what you think. Sporting News help desk that they do not support category weighting. To that end, I have created a new poll on the website. It will be up until Saturday, so please try to vote before then. In light of the fact that weighting is not supported, I have posted 5 options:

1. I do the weighting manually.
2. We remove batting average and make it 5X5
3. We add one of three pitching categories to bring it in to balance. I tried to find ones that impacted starters and relievers equally: HR allowed, total bases allowed or K/BB ratio.

Please vote. I think everyone (except Scott) was comfortable and had adequate room to set up. Well done with the Skype connection to Mike, as he came through loud and clear. Thanks to everyone, for keeping things moving yesterday. 5 hours to complete the draft, especially given the lengthy dinner break, was excellent. Thanks, too, to Scott and Matt for providing their own distinct brand of dinner (and post-dinner) entertainment.

FYI, the rosters are up, but there may be some inconsistencies due to the fact some of you have not provided me with access to your rosters. I do need folks to do this, so here's how:

From the main page, click on "Manager Prefs" under the "Front Office" tab.
Halfway down the page, you'll see "Commish Settings". Please select "Yes" for both questions in that section.

Please verify that your rosters are set up OK.

I was quite surprised by yesterday's draft. I commented to Doug afterwards that I thought it was the weirdest draft in recent memory in terms of how far off I was in undervaluing some players and overvaluing others. However, I think that all teams drafted quite well. I'm curious to know a few things, opinions from all of you.

What was the steal of the draft?
What was your best pick and your worst pick?
If you could pick another team to own this year, whose would it be?

Just some fun questions to start some discussion.

I was reminded of something yesterday that I forgot to set up on the website: the weighting of the pitching categories. I could not find a way to do this and have e-mailed Sporting News for help. If they cannot do this, in fairness to those who spent a great deal on pitching, I think that we should drop an offensive category to bring things into balance. I would recommend batting average, since it's already folded into on-Base percentage. Please provide your thoughts/comments.

Lastly, free agent bidding now ends at midnight Saturday (2 hrs later). The first free agency period is now underway and all free agency bids are to be sent to crbl2006@gmail.com.

Reminders for tomorrow

Before I start, if you haven't done so yet, go here and download a copy of Sporting News' draft planner. It's included with our league registration. It's a 3.5MB Adobe PDF, so make sure you have a copy of Acrobat Reader installed. You can download it for free here.

OK, for tomorrow.....

We are at The Men's Room (next door to the Vine). Please plan for 3 PM. If you were top 7 last year (Pandas, Todd/Joel, John Benoit, Doug, Peter, me), please bring 12 cans/1 or 2 bottles of your favourite non-alcoholic beverage. Everyone else is on for providing snacks. We will start with a short discussion on rostering, followed by a few other housekeeping items. The draft should begin at 3:30. There is an annual Winter BBQ event going on at Philpott as well, and there has been some discussion around breaking at about 6:00 or so to go feed our faces. We can discuss this when everyone arrives. If we don't do this, please bring money to order food. Also, please bring $10 to offset the cost of the website.

A few draft rule reminders:

You can only nominate players for which you have an open roster spot.
Draft order is order of finish from last year. See the website for the order.
The bench draft will follow the main draft. As always, it will be 6 rounds, snake-style (Rounds 1, 3 and 5 draft order is first-to-last. Rounds 2,4 and 6 are last-to-first).

That's all for now. If you require anything else, e-mail me or call me at home (905-387-1084) tonight.

Hi Brian,

Based on the 7 players listed for Al I have his total at $126.

Jason

Brian, you forgot to include Figgins on our list. we only need a catcher, a ut and 3 pitchers.

JS

The Protected Lists

Here they are. I have added a third option, which would be placing a limit on the number of non-DL moves a team can make during the week. Using an example of 5, each team would be allowed 5 moves from the bench to the active roster each week. DL moves do not count. If you use 'em up, you don't get any more before Monday. This way, if you want to roster for the week, do it on Sunday. Otherwise, do it during the week.

Unlike TQStats, I have no control over roster setting, so I will leave it up to the teams. But I will track activity and have the ability to rescind moves whatever option is chosen.

Please respond to the poll before the 25th. I hear the argument about re-rewarding home run hitters. As anyone who has been in this league for a long time knows, I have annually searched for a way to give greater value to doubles and triples hitters. I thought this would do it. Oh, well. Back to the drawing board.

Second, there will be NO sliding scale. Ideas like that clearly show how there may need to be a drug-testing program introduced to the CRBL.

Third, we will remain a keeper league.

That just leaves weekly rostering (which I think will pass) and trades/retained value. I actually think we can debate these issues prior to the draft. I propose a small change in plans: Start the draft at 3 PM and have a discussion on rostering/retained salaries prior to starting. All in favour?

This Smells Of Something...

I received via email the following missive from one James Smithson (who also requests, Brian, that you resend him an invitation to post to the blog himself). As a prelude, allow me to offer an observation: after reading James' exposition on the proposed Sliding Scale idea, I'm tempted to level charges of collusion between the Commissioner and The Orphan Pandas, as the Scale, as suggested, would allow them to rule the league indefinitely.

First what firesales took place last year? I know we didn't make any, and I can't think of any others either. you are correct that under the current system trades do not necessarily have a impact on either teams cap, but that is only true of the season in which the trade is made. the following season the owner has to assume the full salary of any acquired players.

Now as for the sliding scale....where to begin? It is very hard for me to argue against this because it is so advantageous to the Pandas. however, is anyone familiar with the concept of inflation? if you decrease the amount of increase of the cheaper players you are also increasing the amount owners are able to spend on elite players. e.g. if all of our $2 players increase by five dollars we cannot keep roy oswalt. if they increase by $2 we would be stupid not to keep roy oswalt for $35. under the current system we would be keeping 14 players at a cost of $199. under Brian's proposed sliding scale we will be keeping 16 players for a total of $240. now those 16 players include a $30 barry bonds, $35 roy oswalt, $32 johan santana, and a $33 lance berkman. plus under the new system, barring injury, miguel cabrera would most likely play his entire career with the Orphan Pandas organization. whereas the old system would force us to cut him by the time he's 25.

just a few thoughts.....let me know what you think.

JS
As an expansion on James' first point, I think that while reporting the amount "eaten" by each team is a necessary thing, I think further meddling into the issue does nothing but harm. Essentially, what Brian refers to as a "fire sale" is actually a number of owners mortgaging their futures to win in the short term. To that I say: good on 'em. Let them do it, if they're throwing me young guns at affordable/keepable prices in order to lift my unkeepable Studs (who will enter the draft next year no matter who owns them), who are doing me no good if I'm at the bottom or middle of the pile.

As for the second point: the more I think about it, the more I come to the conclusion that a sliding scale doesn't accomplish what it is set out for - the addition of more high-end players to the draft pool. By simultaneously decreasing the amount spent on cheaper (not necessarily worse - see Miguel Cabrera) players, it becomes economically feasible to keep these Studs as their prices escalate.

To address a point not expounded upon by James: the changing of OBS for OPS is, in my estimation, a Bad Thing. We already reward homerun hitters for hitting the ball out of the park (that's what the homerun category is for), so why redouble that reward? Why count homeruns twice (which is essentially what OPS does)? Not only are you increasing the value of power hitters, you are decreasing the value of...well, everyone else.

Okay, that's enough for now. More to come later - but you'll probably have to attend the meeting to hear it.

Austin

Reminder to all

A couple of reminders:

The league meeting this Saturday, March 11 at 6PM at my home (60 Bridgette Drive). Contact me for directions. I need a volunteer to make a run to Taco Bell, since the Champs have decided that that is where we'll dine. Once everyone is here, we'll take orders and everyone will kick in to feed James and Jason. Final list of discussion items:
Change in pitching categories this year. Due to a limitation in the Sporting News configuration, I cannot set up net wins and net saves. Therefore, we are reverting to just wins and saves.
Addition of new hitting category. I want to drop On-Base percentage and replace it with OPS (On-base plus slugging). Also, forget my net steals idea. We'll stick with just stolen bases.
Change in pricing for 2006. I would like to explore a new pricing scheme for keepers for the 2007 season. My plan is a sliding scale more reflective of the player's value. My argument is that I don't think A-Rod would get the same increase as a $1 player. I also want to keep the higher value players in the draft mix each year. I would propose something like this:
2006 price < $10 = $2 increase for 2007
2006 price < $20 = $5 increase for 2007
2006 price < $40 = $8 increase for 2007
2006 price > $41 = $10 increase for 2007
I also want discuss another alternative - eliminating the keeper aspect and starting each year fresh, placing greater impact on the draft.
Retained salary limits for trades. Unfortunately, there are some pretty big loopholes in the retained salary logic we currently use (specifically, if both sides continue to pay their own players, trades have no cap impact). This led to some -pretty impressive (read: ridiculous) fire sale trades prior to the deadline. I think this needs to be eliminated. I propose the following:
For multi player deals, it must be specified how much of each player's salary is being passed to his new owners. Example: I trade $26 Hideki Matsui and $5 Brad Halsey to Doug for $4 Chad Tracy and $1 Adam Eaton. If I am eating $20 of salary difference, Doug and I must agree on how to price Matsui and Halsey, so that, should Doug opt to deal those players in future, it is known how much he's trading them for. This is mostly for my benefit as commissioner, for cap-tracking purposes.
For trades, the most salary that can be retained is 50% of the difference, up to a limit of $25. Example: Again using the trade in the prior bullet, the salary differential is $26 (26+5 = 31 - (4+1) = 26). Of that $26, I can retain $13 and Doug must take on $13. If the differential exceeds $50 (i.e. I throw $52 Alex Rodriguez into the original deal, making the differential $78), the most salary I can retain is $25, meaning Doug has to eat $53.
Last point - Weekly roster management. In an effort to make my life easier and cut a little slack to those of us who have, you know, a life and cannot do all the monitoring to set rosters daily, I would like to change to weekly roster updates. Here's how it would work:
Free agent bidding period would end midnight Friday (rather than Saturday, which is how it is today). I would post free agent results Saturday morning.
All teams would be required to submit roster changes to crbl2006@gmail.com by midnight Saturday. Rosters would be updated by me Sunday and then locked until next Saturday.
Taxi squad moves would only be allowed if a player is placed on the DL during the week.

There will be a strict 10-minute time limit placed on discussion of each of these items, at which point they will be submitted to a vote. Majority rules. If you cannot attend the meeting, e-mail me and let me know. I will send you a ballot to vote on these items, if you so desire.

Other things to note:

Please register your team (if you haven't already done so) at The Sporting News. Here's the link:
Protected lists are due Sunday, March 19 by 6PM. That give me time to put them together and get them out that night.
Draft Day is Saturday, March 25 starting at 4PM at The Men's Room (James, Jason and Austin's place - contact them for directions). Please make every effort to be on time.

Registering

Register for the season by clicking here

2006 Season Update

You should all have an e-mail in your inbox with the 2005 rosters. 2005 salary and 2006 salary (2005 + $5) is included.

I have confirmations for this season from everyone but Al, so we're looking good. Al, please reply by March 1 confirming your commitment to participate this season. A reminder that the draft is still March 25, but it will be at The Men's Room (aka James', Jason's and Austin's apartment). They are right next door to The Vine and, if you need directions, contact any of the three of them. We will plan for a 4PM start. We will order dinner, so plan accordingly. If you finished top 6 last year, please bring 12 cans/bottles of your favourite non-alcoholic beverage. At least 1 person should bring a case of bottled water. If you were 7th of lower, 1 or 2 bags of snack food, please.

I have made an executive decision to switch the league to Sporting News this year. The price is the same and I participate in a number of their online free pools. I figure we'll give 'em a try for a year. Price per team will be $10, payable draft day.

I have the following items to discuss at the pre-season meeting at my house on March 11 at 7PM. They include:

Introduction of a playoff system
Changing Stolen Bases to Net Stolen Bases (SB - Caught)
Changing On-Base Percentage to On-Base Plus Slugging (OPS)
Sliding-scale price increases
Trade/salary retention limits
I am still drafting 4 and 5, so I will send something out when it's done. I hope you have all had an enjoyable offseason and are looking forward, like I am, to another great roto season. A few dates to start with...

The draft will definitely be Saturday, March 25 at Scott Radley's. Current plan is to start at 4 PM. If Caleb has a hockey playoff game, it may be switched to a morning start. Please advise ASAP if this date is a problem.
I would like to have a preliminary meeting at my home on Saturday, March 11 in the evening (6 PM). We'll have the champs dinner then. I have a couple of rule changes I would like to debate and have a vote on introducing the playoff system I proposed at the end of last season. Rule changes will also be voted on. The meeting agenda will be posted to the league weblog (http://www.crbl.blogspot.com) in the coming week.
Protected lists will be due by midnight Sunday, March 19.
I would like all owners to e-mail me at crbl2006@gmail.com by March 1 to commit to participating this year.

I am also looking at switching websites this year. I received a few complaints about slow updates/availability of TQStats. I also have my own issues with managing things. I have looked at a couple of services (mlb.com, sportingnews.com and sportsline.com). In all cases, there will be a small bump in costs per team.

I will send out a spreadsheet of all current rosters and the updated player values (including the $5 bump) next week.

Look forward to seeing all of you.

Brian

Injury Update

I get a lot of e-mails from the Baseball Hot Sheet. I would like to put them on the blog next season, but if anyone feels its unfair for me to do so, please let me know and we can have a debate:

Injury Updates:

OF-Jeremy Reed-SEA The MRI done on Reed's left wrist on Wednesday revealed a partially torn ligament, and he will miss the rest of the 2005 season. Reed is likely to see a hand specialist to determine if he'll need surgery to repair the damage. Even if he needs surgery, he's expected to be ready for spring training.
OF-Carl Crawford-TB Crawford is struggling with a sore left wrist that could cost him the remainder of the games this season. Devil Ray sources indicate Crawford could still be used as a defensive replacement or pinch runner. Swinging a bat gives him the most pain, which is the reason why his at-bats the rest of the season will be very limited.
SS-Bobby Crosby-OAK The A's are shutting Crosby down due to a sore left ankle. It remains sore and isn't completely healed from the fracture he suffered late in August. Crosby has struggled both in the field and at the plate due to the limited mobility. He's expected to heal in plenty of time for spring training.
1B-Shea Hillenbrand-TOR Hillenbrand has a damaged ligament in a knuckle of his left hand. The Blue Jays have elected not to play him the rest of the season. He's expected to see a hand specialist, and there's a good chance he'll need surgery to repair the ligament.
RHP-Keith Foulke-BOS Two months after under going arthroscopic surgery on his left knee, Foulke is going to have a similar procedure done to his right knee. His right knee isn't as troublesome as the left was, but the Red Sox medical staff believes it's better to clear up the problem now.
1B-Justin Morneau-MIN The Twins have another MRI planned for Morneau and his ailing left elbow. He's also projected to receive a pain killing injection for the elbow. Morneau has a bone spur that will need to be surgically removed or shaven down in order to eliminate the pain and swelling he's been dealing with. If he has the surgery, he's expected to be ready for spring training.
OF-Wily Mo Pena-CIN Pena suffered a hyperextended lower back when he collided with the outfield wall on Wednesday. It's unlikely he'll return to the lineup before the end of the season, according to veteran Reds observers.

Roster Management Object Lesson

Well, here's a lesson on the benefits of properly managing your roster over the season. I looked up the "Draft Rosters Stats" option under the "Toys" area. This, as most of you know, calculates standings based strictly on the draft. Check it out (first number is hitting total, second is pitching):

Pride of the Yankees 55+67.8 = 122.8
Barbecued Iguana 66+45.6 = 111.6
John Benoit 41+68.4 = 109.4
Todd Hoare 68+39.6 = 107.6
Orphan Pandas 56.5+31.2= 87.7
Heslingas 44+41.4 = 85.4
Al Baker 26+58.8 = 84.8
Caronport Road Apples 52+26.4 = 78.4
Peter Boughan 25+46.8 = 71.8
Austin Fusilier 30+40.8 = 70.8
Triple Threat 31+36.0 = 67.0
Jon Wilton 34.5+25.2= 59.7
Champion Del Mundo 17+18.0 = 35.0

Some things are the same (no matter how you slice it, Scott's still in last) but that's no misprint at the top. So, Pandas, you may win the season but it looks like I'm gonna win the draft! BOO-YAH!!!!!

September 10 Free Agent Moves

Well, I have to admit I was expecting more activity this week, but here's what I got:

Brian waives David Dellucci and Kuis Matos and signs Casey Blake for $1 and Corey Patterson for $3.

Mike waives Keith Foulke, Zack Greinke and Jose Vidro and signs Francisco Liriano for $2, Brandon McCarthy for $3 nd Mark Ellis for $1.

Heslingas fill two open bench spots by signing Emil Brown for $1 and Matt Cain for $4.

That's it. I would like to renew the league tradition this year of getting together for a World Series game. Game 1 of the Series is scheduled for October 22, so that seems to be a good choice. If anyone out there would like to volunteer to host this event, bids are now being accepted. The other option is that the winning team can choose a restaurant to go to that has TV's and we can do the championship dinner there while watching the game. Of course, since the Pandas are winning, there is a very real possibility that the championship meal may be served by the nearest Taco Bell drive thru.

I would also like to introduce some new wrinkles for the 2006 season. The following are changes I would like to add in:

1. Stolen bases

I would like to change this category to net steals (stolen bases - caught stealing) next year.

2. Trades

First, and this is NOT an item for discussion, trades must identify how much player value is to be assigned to/retained by the trading teams. Example, I trade $25 Hideki Matsui and $5 Brad Halsey to Doug for $4 Chad Tracy and $1 Adam Eaton. Doug and I must agree on how much of Matsui and Halsey's salary Doug will pay and how much I retain. Too often this year, I was forced to guess at this and a precise value must be assigned to the players to allow them to be properly dealt again during the season, should that happen.

I also want to look at the possibility of exploring limits on retained salary. I would like to propose as a starting point that there be an absolute ceiling of $20 per player. So, if I were to deal $42 Todd Helton, the owner I was dealing with must be able to pay at least $22. We can also explore percentage limits, say up to 50% of a player's salary (always round up to the nearest dollar) can be eaten by the trading owner up to the $20 ceiling. So, let's look at the earlier example: 50% of Matsui's salary is $13 and 50% of Halsey's salary is $3. That is the maximum I can eat. In he case of Helton, 50% is $21, which is over the $20 ceiling, so $20 is the max. We can also discuss sliding scales (i.e. retain 100% under $5, 75% under $10, 50% under $20 and so on), but I see a LOT of work for ye olde commish in that option.

3. Divisional play and playoffs

This is one I have always wanted to do, but I have always wanted to stay away from doing two separate drafts. So, I talked it over with Duane and we came up with the following framework:

At the conclusion of the draft, I will conduct a blind draw that will split the league into two six team divisions. The web site will continue to reflect the standings of the whole 12-team league, but there will be separate standings, presented in the message box each Saturday, showing the standings in the 2 divisions. At the end of the season, the top two teams from each division (one of which will, obviously, be the league champ) will advance to a four-team playoff, which I will maintain via a new league blog that I will create.

The four teams will participate in a draft (which can be in-person or via the Net. I prefer the Net.). The teams will draft a roster of 8 position players, two utilities, three starters and one reliever from the 8 MLB playoff teams (draft order will be division winner with most points, the other division winner, division runner up with most points, other runner-up. Draft rounds will ALWAYS be top-down, not snake-style). The teams will compete in the same 11 categories we do today with one difference, as net wins and net saves will be combined into a single number ((wins + saves) - (losses + blown saves)). At the end of the Division Series, the team with the lowest score will be eliminated and the three survivors will participate in a supplemental draft to replace players lost in the Division Series. We then continue to the LCS round and the lowest point-getter at the end of the LDS will be eliminated and the top two will continue on to the World Series.

There is a benefit of keeping more teams interested later into the season, and it will also help (I hope) reduce the number of fire-sale trades made. Or, if it doesn't reduce them, teams will at least have to think a little bit harder about whether or not they're packing it in at trade deadline time. The drawback, and I really don't see it as one, is that the playoff-bound teams will have to commit to an extra draft round for the playoffs. I decided to do the random-draw divisions rather than simply send the top four teams to create the possibility of a middle- or lower-tier team having a chance to make the playoffs.

Woof. Long note.
